This course provides an excellent opportunity to learn the fundamentals of pistol shooting. In New York State, completing this course is a prerequisite for obtaining your “Premise Only Pistol Permit.Please note that the Basic Pistol Safety Course does not qualify for the “carry concealed pistol permit.”

To acquire a “Carry Concealed Pistol Permit” in New York State, completing this 16-hour course is mandatory. Participants will gain knowledge of the fundamentals of pistol shooting as well as New York State laws. Additionally, students are required to successfully finish a 2-hour live fire range training course. After fulfilling both the classroom and live fire training requirements, applicants will be eligible to apply for the “carry concealed pistol permit.”

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was created to meet the need for a nationally recognized certification for range safety officers. To enroll in this course, you must be at least 21 years old. To successfully complete the RSO course, you must demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude required for organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. The course covers the roles and responsibilities of an RSO, standard operating procedures for the range, range inspections and rules, handling firearm stoppages and malfunctions, as well as conducting Range Safety Briefings that outline emergency procedures.

  • This course fulfills the training requirements set forth by the NYS Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA) and is mandatory for initial concealed carry licensing and first license renewal as of September 1, 2022.
    The CCIA specifically permits NRA Certified Instructors to deliver the required curriculum. This course meets the concealed carry licensing requirements for Nassau and Suffolk Counties in New York State. It is based on the NRA CCW course and incorporates the necessary non-NRA legal and state shooting requirements.
    The NRA CCW course provides essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for carrying a concealed pistol for personal defense, adhering to the MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR LIVE-FIRE TRAINING. This instructor-led course offers direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor and consists of sixteen hours of in-person classroom instruction, along with two hours of live-fire training. The curriculum includes:
    • General firearm safety
    • Pistol nomenclature and selecting a pistol for self-defense
    • Ammunition knowledge and selection
    • Drawing from concealment
    • Loading and stoppage remediation
    • Mindset, responding to an attack, and the aftermath
    • Carry modes and pistol concealment
    • Firearm cleaning and maintenance
    • Range safety rules
    • Safe storage requirements for firearms
    • State and federal gun laws
    • Situational awareness for concealed carry, including firearm display and concealment
    • Conflict de-escalation tactics
    • The adverse effects of alcohol and drug use on firearm safety
    • Best practices for interactions with law enforcement
    • Sensitive locations as defined in Penal Law § 265.01-e and restrictions on firearm possession in designated areas under Penal Law § 265.01-d
    • Conflict management
    • Use of deadly physical force
    • Suicide prevention
    • Basic marksmanship principles, including stance, grip, sight alignment, sight picture, breathing, and trigger control
    • Each student is required to demonstrate proficiency by successfully completing a live-fire assessment. After the 16 hours of in-person classroom instruction, students must also achieve a minimum score of 80% on a written test covering the course material. Attendance for the entire 16-hour classroom session and completion of the 2-hour live-fire session is mandatory. Participation does not guarantee a certificate of completion; failure in any component will necessitate re-registration and payment to retake the course.
      Students will receive reference materials, take an NRA CCW Student Examination for each chapter, and upon successful completion, will be awarded a course completion certificate signed by the NRA Secretary and their NRA Certified Instructor.
